About the
Get Along Gang?

The Get Along Gang is a unique group within Scotland who support young people with varying degrees of hearing loss. We set up this charitable organisation nine years ago and it is currently twenty members strong.

Our Groups's Objectives

First we aim to make life easier for all young people with hearing impairments, including those who may also suffer from sight impairments, cerebral palsy, hyperactivity and behavioural problems.

Second we provide a meaningful and caring resource that looks at the needs and difficulties experienced by those with hearing problems, such as personal isolation, poor advocacy skills, lack of confidence and poor social skills.

What do we achieve this?
We have two weekly meetings. held alternately at the Baldridgeburn Community Centre, Dunfermline and at another venue in Fife. 12 to 18 year-olds get together every other Monday from19:00 to 21:00, while 7-12 year olds gather on alternate Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:00. In addition, we use local Sports centres such as Dunfermline's Carnegie Centre and the Lochgelly Leisure Centre.

On fine days, we have been known to journey to other attractions across Central Scotland and organise summer vacations to other areas of Britain. All members are transported to and from these venues by our faithful 16-seater minibus (pictures above), obtained through the National Lottery Fund and driven by committed volunteers, who have passed Fife Council's driving assessments.

Professional Advice and Specialised Training
We offer professional advice and specialised training on issues affecting people in the hearing impaired community:

  1. Environmental aids, e.g. flashing door light / smoke alarms, minicoms, loop systems for TV etc.
  2. Social skills. e.g. basic cooking hygiene, safe use of public transport etc.
  3. Benefit advice
  4. Other related advice where specialist speakers or workers are there to help and encourage members.
